Dream Team '92 vs 08'

I was fortunate enough in my young career to cover the 1992 Dream Team, who is arguably the greatest team ever assembled in any sport. Only two of the twelve players on that team were NOT one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players. This team also included the great MJ's, Jordan and Johnson. We will probably never see a team like this in our lifetime or even the rest of human existence. There is a current team that resembles a lot like that OG Dream Team, the current Team USA basketball team. This might be the closest we see to the '92 Dream Team we will ever see. At the end of this generation we may even look back to say that this was an even greater team.

Patrick Ewing vs Dwight Howard
Howard is a more athletic big man who has great defense and a killer on the boards. Ewing had a much better offensive game and had a better perimeter shot. Howard is developing into a good offensive player and he is only 22 years old. Another note Howard doesn't go through six towels in one quarter of sweating.

David Robinson vs Tyson Chandler
Chandler is a superior low post defender and rebounder. He can finish near the rim, but has no post moves. Robinson was much more versatile. The admiral could score and play defense. Although he was not as bulky as Chandler is, his athleticism for a man his size made up for it.

Scottie Pippen vs Carmelo Anthony
Pippen was the real life Robin, the ultimate side kick. The best comparison to Pippen would be Shawn Marion, another real life Robin. Since Marion will most likely not be on this team, we will have to compare him to Melo. Melo is a great scorer, he can shoot over you or take you to the hole. Pippen also had a great shot and could finish around the hoop. Pippen's defense was far greater than any defending Anthony could ever do.

Charles Barkley vs Amare Stoudemire
Amare is a great talent, but Barkley was just a beast. Barkley was the leading scorer of that team and no living creature could stop him. Amare may turn into that same player down the road. He is a great finisher and is slowly developing his perimeter game. There is no one in the NBA that can bring what Barkley did, but Amare could fill some of that void. Amare could

Karl Malone vs Carlos Boozer
Malone defined the toughness on the original team. He did the dirty work of scoring down low and grabbing rebounds. Boozer will bring that same intensity and physical presence. Boozer is a big body that will do the physical dirty work. A lot of similarities like working great off the pick and roll and both playing for Utah. In fact Boozer looked up to Malone so much, he married Malone's sister just to get in his family. Sorry, but that last part was made up.

Larry Bird vs Mike Miller
Both require attention because they are threats on the perimeter. An aging Bird is just as good as a prime Miller. They also draw comparisons because they are both white, there I said it. Is there any other reason that needs to be pointed out?

Clyde Drexler vs Dwyane Wade
Both are versatile, get to the rim, and great finishers. Both are creative and can get any shot they want on the floor. They are also good passers and can flow with any offensive scheme. They will glide through the air and dunk on you or just put up an amazing acrobatic layup to finish, either way you can't go wrong.

Chris Mullin vs Michael Redd
Mullin was the shooter of the team. Mullin was another perimeter threat which let the slashers get in the paint. Redd does the exact same thing. Opponents cannot sag off these guys in the perimeter because they are deadly.

John Stockton vs Jason Kidd
The team's leaders on the court. Look to get everyone involved and are creative with and without the ball. They make the game easier for everyone on the team and act as a second coach on the floor. I think Kidd is the better floor general and emotional leader for his group. You can also stick Chris Paul here as well. He is taking the point guard position to a whole new level.

Magic Johnson vs Lebron James
We have all read this comparison before. Huge play makers and have the most creative minds on the court. Each can play any position on the court and are amazing passers, as well as scorers. They find it more important to get people involved first, but when called upon they can take over a game instantly. Lebron may one day be considered the best ever, but for now let's just call him "King."

Michael Jordan vs Kobe Bryant
Kobe is the closest thing we have to MJ since MJ. Kobe's competitiveness, skill, die hard winning attitude has put in the same sentence as his airness himself. They smell blood and will rip your heart out if they get the chance. They are the team's fight and will keep everyone on their toes if they get to comfortable. There will never be another Jordan, but settling for Kobe is not bad either.

Do we have a new dream team? We will have to wait, may be at the end of their careers we might look back and say that this was the greatest team assembled. I did not forget about the coaches and Dream Team MVP Christian Laettner, but like my opinions they don't really matter. This current USA team is much younger and athletic. Many of them are in their primes, as opposed to the '92 team where they were aging and past their primes. The rest of the world has caught up and international play is much more competitive than it used to be. The '92 team won their games by an average of 43.8 points and did not ever use a single timeout. The current team is the best team we have seen so far since that great team. We all know that the Original Dream Team is the only Dream Team, but for the sake of argument, if you put these two teams on the court, who do you think would win? I don't know, but it would be a game for the ages.

nice try but original dream team dominates this matchup

any team with jordan wins. hands down.

if both were at their primes the 1992 would kill them. if they played each other as is... the 2008 team would win by in inch

if both were at their primes?

you obviously weren't old enough to watch the '92 team, but they were all in their prime at the time.

magic only quit because of hiv, barkley was the '93 mvp and carried phoenix to the finals losing to the bulls in 6. ewing took the knicks to the finals in '94. david robinson scored 71 in 94 and was the scoring champ. pippen sans jordan nearly took the Bulls to the finals the year michael retired if it was't for a bad call in game 6 against the knicks. drexler won a title in '95. karl malone would win mvp 5-6 years later when he was suppose to decline. stockton was an all-star 6 times after the dream time, averaging over 10 assists 5 straight years after the dream team. the only person remotely close to being past their prime on the '92 team was chris mullin, who still averaged 26 points the next season, until injury took him down. and again, him & bird are both shooters so they aren't as affected by age.

this new usa team has 2 players who aren't even all-stars. several players who have not reached their prime. one player, kidd, who is clearly past his prime (shoots 35%, which in international play where they clog the lane is absolutely killer)

a team of hall of famers in their prime (that's why it's called the dream team) against a team has 2 non-all-stars, 2 borderline all-stars, a way past his prime pg. there's really no comparison.

the dream team was so formidable that their opponents asked for their autographs and watched in awe when they played. the current teams can barely win a medal and are consistently embarrassed by international competition.

Yes I am well aware the magnitude of the Original Dream Team because I was able to cover some of their games. This piece was merely for arguments sake because this might be the best talent we have put out there since that team. I completely agree that the '92 is the all time greatest, but we may change our minds in the long run when some of these current players go to the hall of fame.

I'll take the opposite line: Kobe, Lebron, and Jason Kidd are top-10 to 20 guys. Kobe is equal to guarding MJ, and both can score at will; Lebron is not Magic, but he would be younger, bigger, and stronger and I think could challenge Magic. Kidd is better than Stockton...no question. Chauncey is underrated, but not as good as Isaiah; but combine him with Deron Williams and you have a good reserve guard bench.

At forward, the '92 team has a clear advantage. Barkley, Bird, Pippen, and Malone are monsters. However, Bird was at the end of his career and back problems were problematic; Pippen is and has been overrated. Also remember, LeBron plays small forward -- who matches up with him? Malone and Barkely were never mobile enough, and Bird is too old by this point. Combine Carmelo who can score real well, Mike Miller and Mike Redd who are better three-point guys than anyone on the 92 team, and add the length of Tashyun and you have a pretty good set of forwards.

Centers are completely different too. Ewing and Robinson are tall and mobile, but Howard is young and a beast, Stoudamire gives up defense but can run and score, and Tyson Chandler can supply any defensive deficiencies of Stoudamire...plus, those two can be fours or fives.

Now, 2008 won't look completely the same as 2007. Add a healthy Dwayne Wade who can definitely score and get to the hole; Iverson, who is way better than Isaiah; Boozer, who has become a double-double machine; Shawn Marion who is Pippen 2.0; maybe Bynum. And you have a great team. Also, keep in mind Chris Paul has become a superstar and was injured, as was Bosh and Arenas, pierce and Brand. I think the NBA is better than it was 25 years ago, though it was more fun and uptempo.

Every team has superstars, the West is way deeper than it was during Magic's Laker runs when the Rockets would be ok, the Trailblazers occasionally, and the Sixers in the other conference. Let's face it, these guys are faster, stronger, and last year showed, just as willing to give up the rock if it means not being embarassed internationally.

No way. '92 could play as an actual team. Most of the players in the NBA now are all showboat look at me athletes. I wouldnt be suprised if the US squad lost to Argentina or a European squad frankly.

No, the 92' team was the greatest team ever assembled. Every member of that team is or will be in the Hall of Fame. There is no contest. MJ, MAgic, Bird, Mailman, Pippen, Stockten, Ewing, The Admerial, and on and on. The Greatest team ever.

This team was good because they had a common goal, to win the Gold. Todays players are to busy trying to get money out of everything they can, and being mr. popular, and not on winning.

And the 92 team had one over major asset, they knew how to play Defence. Todays players don't wont to play defence, they wont the score points.

What? No Christian Laettner vs. Brad Miller matchup? He's still technically on the team, right?

"I did not forget about the coaches and Dream Team MVP Christian Laettner, but like my opinions they don't really matter."
Laettener is the blemish to this otherwise perfect team. Brad Miller is garbage also.

Original Dream Team is the best team

I think by in 30 years this will be a debate because we weren't saying that these guys were the greatest until they retired. Let's discuss this then.

Ridiculous garbage. I really wanted to gag when you compared Miller to Bird. Also Kidd a better floor general for his than Stock was for the Dream Team? God you're out of your mind.

It's hard to tell right now. History will have to judge, because most of the '92 Dream Team were already legends and/ or seasoned veterans when they played. Many of the superstars on the '08 team (LBJ, Melo, DWade, CP3) have not even reached their prime yet. I will have to admit though, it's hard to compete against MJ, Magic, and Bird. But one thing about it, Magic and Bird were at the end of their runs by then. Also, the '92 had perennial all stars at every position who could play their roles great. The '08 team has a few role players who are not perennial all stars such as Mike Miller and Tyson Chandler.

Again, only time will tell. Right now, I lean toward the '92 team though.

agreetodisagree, i agree..absolutely true..

one of which is that people keep thinking lbj is like mj, hes actually alot more like magic, kobe is like mj, no one else comes closer, kb24 and lbj together are LETHAL..

the 2(healthy) are enuff to carry the team with average supporting players..no offence to the other players..

stop hyping the old dream team

i think one of the main reason they dominated in 92 is because there was NO basketball outside of USA !!! (and i can say that, i'm from europe)

nowadays countrys like greece or spain improved a loooot and are much much better than 92 ..

the skill of the opponents of 92 you can compare to those countrys the team today beat with like 40 points ..

so considering this i would say both teams are quite equal
don't get me wrong , i love mj and co but just take a look at the amount of international players in the nba .. that says it all ..

Everyting negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise.

Kobe Bryant

If I could put together an All-American team of the best currently active NBA players to go against the 08 team regardless of availability, I'd go for playmakers and height and post-up scoring.

I feel that the 12-man team I have put together here would have a very legitimate chance at staying competitive with or even occasionally beating the 1992 team:

The only top player at his position I have left out is Shaquille O'Neal. That's not because Shaq is injured or can't play. I'm going by chemistry according to prior history of which combinations of players have played well together in international baskeball.

Starters:
PG: Jason Kidd
SG: Kobe Bryant
SF: Carmelo Anthony
PF: Kevin Garnett
C: Tim Duncan

Bench:
PG: Brandon Roy
SG: Michael Redd
SF: Lebron James
PF: Amare Stoudemire
C: Dwight Howard

Final spots:
Swingman Guard (plays 3 positions): Tracy McGrady
Forward-Center: Rasheed Wallace

This new team is good. One for the books. But against that 92 team the veteran experience makes all the difference. Most of the guys now while great don't understand an the game in the same way. The team in 92 was so aware of the court and everyone on it the got dunk after dunk after dunk. And when they took a long shot it was because it was what they wanted at that time. This team while showing signs of this are still can't compare....the only one would can hold a candle to their counter part is lebron and other than that kobe is the only other player on those levels....think about that 92 team how many of them are in that list of the 50 greatest players...who on the current team will there.....kobe and bron....
